Here’s How You Can Extend the Longevity of Your Pool Equipment

Having a pool at home is a perfect way for family and friends to connect. But maintaining it goes beyond cleaning and refilling the water, as the equipment will need replacement or repair at some point.

All pool equipment has a standard lifespan. Without maintenance, severe damage can occur, meaning costly repairs.

Pool pump lifespan

All pools have pumps to handle all the wet duties and provide water for the pool itself. Furthermore, a pool motor is the moving part of the pump.

There are two types of pool pumps. Modern pumps are typically made of plastic, while older pumps consist of cast iron or bronze. Both options last for around the same period, 10 to 12 years.

With exceptional care, high-quality pumps can operate for more than 15 years. These examples are top-of-the-line models, but maintenance also plays an essential role in longevity.

The pump should outlast the pool motor, typically by two or three years. If a pump breaks down before then, you should install a replacement.

Pool motor lifespans

Pool motors sit at the back of the pump. Due to a seal, they don’t come into contact with the water. Without an engine, pool pumps won’t work.

Motors come in two varieties: copper winding and magnetic drive.

  • Copper winding motors spin and create plenty of friction. Therefore, they have a shorter lifespan, of around three to five years.

  • Magnetic drive motors, on the other hand, don’t produce excessive amounts of friction. Therefore, owners can expect them to last from six to ten years, twice the lifespan of the older models. If cared for properly, they can last even longer.

Pool filter lifespan

The pool filter ensures water cleanliness, preventing any dirt and debris from entering the pool. Without it, the water may become murky and discolored.

Other than cleaning the water, the filter is also in charge of regulating water pressure. Some people refer to them as filter tank bodies.

With the right conditions, pool filters will last for ten years before breaking. Sunlight can have a detrimental effect, accelerating the process, and the other parts such as clamps and valves may not last as long as the filter. Pool owners should check on all of these components every year.

Schedule regular pool maintenance

Regular pool equipment maintenance will ensure that you make the most out of your pumps, motors, and filters and promptly detect any possible issues. In the long term, this could help you save money on potentially costly repairs.
