Signs a Pool Needs Plaster Repair

Proper maintenance keeps the pool aesthetically pleasing and helps it last longer and function at its best. Timely repairs are a vital aspect of pool care and upkeep. A common repair a pool may require is plaster repair.

What is plaster?

Plaster is a critical component of a concrete inground pool that makes it visually more appealing and acts as a protective covering to maintain its structural strength. However, the plaster can experience issues due to incorrect installation, neglected maintenance, or natural wear and tear that demand immediate attention. Ignoring the plaster problems can result in significant damage and major issues down the road. Let's look at a few telltale signs that a pool needs plaster repair:

Peeling or chipping

Plaster is the pool's top layer, giving it a finished look. If the plaster peels, chips, flakes, or is damaged, it indicates that it has worn away and needs repair. The peeling or flaking of plaster is known as spalling, which usually occurs on the pool's floors and steps. Extremely low pH or calcium levels can cause spalling, leaving the underlying surfaces exposed to damage from water and chemicals.

Stains

Although plaster pools are durable and long-lasting, they have a soft surface, making them vulnerable to stains over time. Stains in the plaster can occur due to excessive minerals, organic materials like leaves and dirt, improper cleaning, or chemical imbalance. Stains can also indicate underlying pool problems like cracked plaster. A pool repair service can quickly identify and treat the causes of stains.

Roughness

Pools should have a smooth surface. However, the chemicals can cause the plaster to wear away and roughen the surface over time. Swimming in a pool with a rough surface can cause cuts and bruises on hands and feet. Call professionals for repair if the pool's surface feels bumpy when running your fingers over it. Pool etching, resulting from low calcium levels and alkalinity, can also lead to roughness.

Delamination

Delamination happens when the plaster separates from the underlying concrete layer. It happens when the surface is poorly prepared, or there is a weak bond between plaster and concrete. Earth movements due to an earthquake or other reasons can cause delamination. Replastering is usually the only solution when delamination affects a large pool area.

Cracks or crazing

Tiny, clustered cracks on the plaster's surface are craze cracks. They occur when the pool plaster shrinks. Cracks running down the pool's walls are dangerous. They can deepen over time and spread to other areas. Cracks can lead to leaks and weaken the pool's structure. Call a professional right away if there are cracks in the plaster.

Fading or discoloration

Constant exposure to sunlight, body oils, and chemicals can cause the pool plaster to fade or become discolored over time. Mistakes during the installation process can also result in discoloration. Errors in plastering and improper pool chemistry can discolor the pool. It ruins the pool's appearance and can lead to degradation.

Maintain the pool's beauty

Pool plaster issues can affect its look and functionality. Timely repairing of the plaster extends the pool's life and maintains its beauty. Contact a local pool service if signs indicate the plaster needs repair or replastering.
